Gleaners of the Field (2024)
Archival research led the artist to evidence of an 18th century myth that emerged in response to numerous Enclosure Acts – that combining the soil of all common land in London would create the ultimate growing medium for wheat. To test this, Young collected samples from all of London’s 126 common land sites, in which is sown Red Lammas, a ubiquitous millable landrace pre-1800s wheat. Exhibited alongside are reproductions of anonymous threatening letters sent to landowners and councils from 18th century to the present, and a stock ticker displaying live wheat prices.
