Roma (2013)
Text, single channel video
This residency coincided with a huge archaeological find of Roman artefacts at the site of the then-to be constructed European headquarters of Bloomberg at the nearby Cannon Street, which inspired the work I subsequently made. I created a video installation based on a semi-fictional psycho-geographic walk around the perimeter of the walls demarcating Roman London, projected in the gallery as a bird’s-eye-view abstract shape. The route still exists, marked out by buildings such as Leadenhall Market, in and around the Monument area of London. The projection was accompanied by a stream-of-consciousness text of the author walking the shape/route, trying to reconcile the history of the Roman Empire with the contemporary financial ‘empire’ in central London.
